Lugging The Right Laptop

You're about to pack Junior off to college, but he'll need more than a pad and clean socks. Here's what to look for in a laptop

Most laptops come with brawny processors, so we figured five other must-haves into the prices:

A HARD DRIVE WITH AT LEAST 160 GB
That will allow for storage of up to 62,000 photos, 35,000 songs, 90 hours of video—and homework, too.

AT LEAST 1 GB OF MEMORY
For Windows Vista Home Premium, add an extra GB to enhance gaming, digital video editing, and DVD production. Mac OS X users will want it for graphic design software.

WIRED AND WIRELESS NETWORKING
They're essential for connecting to campus networks and external devices such as digital cameras, printers, and stereo headphones. Get Bluetooth as well.

A LARGER-CAPACITY BATTERY
You need it in classrooms or other spots where plugs aren't handy.

AN NVIDIA OR ATI GRAPHICS CARD
For movies, photos, and 3D games.

WHERE TO BUY
Trying to get a great price on a laptop? Your first instinct will be to search online—and you should. But the best deal could be at the campus bookstore or computer shop. Selection will be limited—say four or five models instead of dozens—however prices are usually 15% lower than at a retailer like Best Buy (BBY ) or Circuit City Stores (CC ). Better yet, many campus-based vendors sweeten deals with longer warranties and on-site repairs.

APPLE BLACK MACBOOK
Consumers are ditching their PCs in droves, in part because of the Mac's ease of use and the iPod halo effect. Starting at $1,099, the MacBook offers storage for work and play and software that's easy to learn and use. Grab one before fall, and Apple (AAPL ) is throwing in a $199 rebate for an iPod nano. $1,675 store.apple.com

APPLE MACBOOK PRO

Battery collections launched across Harlow

Kerbside battery collections have started to be rolled out across Harlow following the "huge success" of a battery recycling trial.

Residents in Harlow have received boxes to recycle their batteries

Harlow district council announced this week that it has started offering battery collections to 30,000 residents in addition to commingled kerbside collections of paper, glass, cans, aerosols and card and collections of textiles.

The service, which is being run in partnership with local environment group ECCO and the Waste and Resources Action Programme, was originally launched for 6,000 households in April 2006 as part of WRAP's research into the most effective way of collecting household batteries in the UK

Since the trials started, Harlow has diverted more than 40,400 batteries - or over one tonne - have been diverted form landfill and recycled by WRAP's contractor, Darlaston-based G&P - which WRAP has branded a "huge success."

Councillor Eleanor Macy, Harlow council's chair of the environment and community committee, said: "This is a very encouraging development to an important pilot scheme. I would like to thank Harlow residents for their battery recycling effort, it's fantastic that even more people can now participate. I'm delighted that this scheme will enable more items to be recycle by residents rather than sent to landfill."

Collections

Under Harlow's extended battery recycling service, kerbside collections will be offered to all properties with ground floor front doors across the Harlow district and will see residents receiving a small battery recycling box, which they can put out on the same day as a bag for textile waste. Meanwhile, residents in flat blocks will be able to take their batteries to the household waste recycling centre.

Batteries accepted by both schemes range from single use AA batteries to laptop and mobile phone rechargeable batteries. The scheme will be reviewed in March 2008.

Chris Davey, manager of local authority relations at WRAP, said: "It is quick and easy to add batteries to your recycling routine and every battery counts. It is great to see that the residents of Harlow have made battery recycling a regular habit, and I'm sure this enthusiasm will be adopted by many more residents when the scheme extends."

The Harlow trial is one of 13 kerbside battery collections being trialled by WRAP in 13 local authority areas across the UK. Retail take-back schemes, community drop-off points and postal trials are also being tested.
